HISTORY OF THE WARWICK MELROSE
Tucked into the heart of Oak Lawn, the Warwick Melrose has been a Dallas icon since 1924. Civil War veteran Colonel George Mellersh once owned the land, naming the area “Oak Lawn” for its lush trees and natural beauty. As Dallas grew in the early 1900s, a banker named Ballard M. Burgher transformed the former farmland by commissioning a grand high-rise hotel: The Melrose.
The Melrose was designed by a famous architect, C.D. Hill, who was known for designing the Dallas Municipal Building and Fair Park Coliseum, and soon drew a glamorous crowd, hosting legends like Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Arthur Miller, and Luciano Pavarotti. In 1981, the hotel introduced luxury upgrades and new signature spots like the award-winning Landmark Restaurant and the beloved Library Bar. In 1983, the City of Dallas honored the hotel’s legacy by granting it a historic landmark status.
In 2007, The Melrose joined the Warwick Hotels & Resorts collection, becoming The Warwick Melrose. The Warwick Melrose has blended timeless elegance with modern comfort, remaining one of Dallas’ most storied and beloved destinations.
